Our Emotional Story:
Told by NeoHERO’s™ Founder, Lindsay Spurgeon, for the first time while presenting at The Frothy Beard for 1 Million Cups Charleston.
Premature Birth, Near Death, Miraculous Survival:
A Solo Fight at Twenty-Six Weeks
The labor began suddenly and quietly, four months too soon, catching the mother entirely alone in her home. At just twenty-six weeks gestation, the premature birth was terrifyingly swift. When the baby was born, they were fragile, translucent, and tragically silent, too underdeveloped to manage the immediate, vital functions of breathing and circulation outside the womb. The mother, in shock and despair, made the desperate call for emergency help, knowing intuitively that this was a crisis beyond her ability to manage.
When the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team arrived, the severity of the preemie's condition and their tiny size immediately exposed a devastating gap in resources. The standard resuscitation equipment carried on the ambulance was designed for full-term newborns or larger children, rendering critical tools like masks and breathing tubes far too large and thus useless for the tiny, struggling infant. Without the necessary specialized, miniature equipment and lacking the specific, intense training required for an extreme prematurity scenario, the team's frantic attempts at stabilization proved tragically insufficient. Due to these limitations, the baby’s heart could not sustain the effort, and a complete cardiac arrest occurred during the rushed transport, leading to a grim period of thirty minutes without a heartbeat before reaching the hospital.
Upon arrival at the Emergency Room, the situation was taken over by a specialized Neonatal Resuscitation Team. This unit was equipped not only with the correct micro-sized equipment but also possessed the advanced, highly practiced skills from intensive Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training. Recognizing the urgency and knowing the precise protocols for such a tiny patient, they used specialized tools—like a tiny breathing tube and a carefully controlled resuscitation device—to restart the vital functions. Against all odds, and thanks to the team's expert intervention, the baby’s pulse was successfully restored after 30 minutes of silence. The newborn survived the initial crisis and, following months of intensive care, is now home. This child is a potent testament to the power of specialized medical preparation, underscoring the vital difference that the right equipment and expert training make in the face of an impossible early birth. This is the birth story of NeoHERO.
Every Newborn. Every First Responder. We are the world’s first and only nonprofit focused on improving neonatal health by providing expert guidance, resources, equipment, and education to emergency responders in prehospital transport. NeoHERO Foundation™ is a South Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded on March 7, 2025.
NeoHERO’s™ founder is Lindsay Spurgeon, a Board-Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with additional Board-Certification in Neonatal and Pediatric Transport. The foundation was created following an impactful patient experience, where a neonate was born at home and brought in through the emergency department lifeless with no heartbeat. Lindsay was told by EMS: “We don’t have the training to resuscitate these babies and we don’t carry equipment this small. We did the best we could.”
The NeoHERO™ mission is to improve neonatal health by providing expert guidance, resources, equipment, and education to emergency responders in prehospital transport.
Why NeoHERO™ is Essential
The NeoHERO™ Operating Model
The NeoHERO™ Impact
Materials for Learning
Simulation training is the single most critical element for translating life-saving NRP knowledge into high-performance competence for first responders. Because neonatal resuscitations are less common in the prehospital setting, EMS and fire personnel must practice these high-risk, low-frequency skills repeatedly in a safe environment to build muscle memory and overcome crisis stress. NeoHERO™ requires a range of realistic simulation tools, including term newborn and preterm newborn simulators, a dedicated airway trainer, and all necessary, small-scale supplies—such as practice airway equipment, venous access kits, and training medications—to ensure our responders are fully prepared to confidently manage the immediate, complex, and time-critical needs of any infant born outside of a hospital.
Continuing Education for First Responders
Beyond initial NRP certification, NeoHERO's™ expansion goal is to provide additional classroom training sessions and hands-on drills to ensure first responders maintain expert competency. Crucial to this effort is offering high-fidelity neonatal mock codes, which allow teams to practice complex, stressful resuscitations in a realistic environment to refine teamwork, communication, and leadership skills under pressure. Furthermore, integrating the S.T.A.B.L.E. course will provide post-resuscitation, pre-transport stabilization training, equipping responders with the critical knowledge needed to manage temperature, airway, blood pressure, lab work, and emotional support, ensuring the newborn is in the safest possible condition during transport to a specialty care facility.
Medical Supplies
To truly bridge the gap in prehospital neonatal care, NeoHERO™ provides specialized NeoPACKs™ (Neonatal Prehospital, Airway, Care, Knowledge) designed to facilitate the rapid application of life-saving skills. These kits are vital because standard EMS supplies lack the correct sizes and tools for newborns. Our comprehensive kits include: prehospital kit specialized for neonatal transport with airway and ventilation management equipment, including the Neo-Tee resuscitator for precise pressure delivery and ventilation, along with properly sized neonatal and preterm masks, care tools such as equipment and crucial thermoregulation supplies— a thermal mattress, a polyurethane-lined knit-hat, and a polyurethane wrap—to prevent dangerous heat loss in infants, and knowledge and tools of NRP protocols and helpful guides. By supplying this essential, customized equipment directly to first responders, we ensure they are fully equipped for resuscitation and stabilization. Looking ahead, we plan to expand our offerings with additional safety and transport equipment that goes above and beyond the initial launch of these emergency kits.
“Neonatal transport is my life’s work and my passion. Safety is always number one.”
